From State Rep. Dave Paul, October 2026 …

Dear Friends,
I know there's a lot going on with elections right now--both here in our district and across the nation. Instead of talking about our campaign, I'd like to take this opportunity to update you on the legislative work I've led to improve behavioral health services in our community.

It’s clear from talking to local families, public safety officials, and healthcare providers that the existing programs to help those suffering from an acute mental health crisis are not working well—and in many cases are failing the very people that need help the most. In parts of our region, Designated Crisis Responders (DCRs) are not conducting face-to-face evaluations to determine what treatment is needed, resulting in individuals in crisis being released into the community to harm themselves or others.  

Over the last 2 years, I’ve collaborated with local leaders, public safety leaders, and the North Sound Behavioral Health Administrative Services Organization (ASO) to improve the DCR program in our community. The goal is to create a new rapid response, in-person system that quickly gets a mobile response team to help someone experiencing a behavioral health crisis. These teams will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist community members and get them the most appropriate care. This work will be coordinated with local first-responders to help ensure the response will happen quickly—and not hours after an initial 911 call. 

In 2025, I also worked with healthcare professionals and county officials to secure $927,000 in state funding to expand critical mental health crisis care and detox services at the Ituha Stabilization Facility in Oak Harbor.

These investments will lead to faster relief, stronger support systems, and a safer path to recovery for our community members when they need it most. I'll continue to work with community members, local leaders, healthcare professionals, and fellow legislators to prioritize improving behavioral health services throughout our region.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,
As another election season comes to a close, I want to take a moment to recognize the people who have given so much of their time and energy to our communities.

Running for public office isn't easy. Neither is the work of organizing, volunteering, knocking on doors, and having conversations with neighbors. It takes commitment, perseverance, and a genuine desire to make a difference.

Whatever the election results, I'm grateful to everyone who stepped forward to serve and to the many volunteers and supporters who helped make their campaigns possible.

On Monday, November 9, I'm hosting a post-election gathering in Coupeville to bring everyone together and say thank you.

We'll be joined by several candidates from across our region, including Barbara Fuller, Diedre Butler, Grant Shaw, Greg Banks, Andrew Scott, Tavier Wasser, Janet St. Clair, and Joe Burns.

Food and beverages will be provided, and this is not a fundraiser. It's simply an opportunity to spend time together, recognize everyone's hard work, and thank those who contributed to this election season.

I've always believed that public service is about more than winning elections. It's about showing up, listening to people, and working to make our communities better. That work continues long after the votes are counted.

I hope you'll join us for an evening of appreciation and good company as we close out this election season and look toward what's ahead.
