It is clear that Island County voters will have plenty of decisions to make when you fill out your ballots later this year. The primary election is Aug. 4; the general election is Nov. 3. Here’s a look at who’s running for what:
CONGRESS 2nd DISTRICT
Incumbent U.S. Rep Rick Larsen of Everett will face two Democratic challengers in the Aug. 4 primary election. Business owner Tomas Scheel of Ferndale and nonprofit consultant Devin Hermanson of Seattle both filed to challenge Larsen’s re-election bid. Republican Edwin H. Feller of Lynden also filed for the seat.

10th LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT
Both Democratic incumbents in the 10th Legislative District will face Republican challengers in this year’s mid-term elections. Position 1 State Rep. Clyde Shavers of Whidbey Island will face Stanwood Republican Robert (Chili) Hicks. The Position 2 seat currently held by State Rep. Dave Paul of Oak Harbor has drawn two Republican challengers: Carrie R. Kennedy and Tim Hazelo, both of Oak Harbor.

DISTRICT 3 ISLAND COUNTY COMMISSIONER
Three candidates are seeking the open seat on the Island County Commission created by Commissioner Janet St. Clair’s decision to not seek re-election. District three encompasses all of Camano Island and parts of North Whidbey. Democrats Satin Arnett and Grant Shaw, both of Camano Island, filed as Democrats. Republican Matthew Van Peltof Oak Harbor has also entered the race.

ISLAND COUNTY ASSESSOR
Incumbent Assessor Kelly Mauck of Camano Island filed for re-election without stating a party preference. In 2022 he ran as a Republican. Doug Stults of Oak Harbor filed as a Democrat. Stults currently works in the Assessor’s office.

ISLAND COUNTY AUDITOR
Incumbent County Auditor Sheilah Crider filed for re-election as an Independent. In 2022 she ran as a Republican. Andrea Downs of Freeland and Barbara Fuller of Coupeville both filed as Democrats. Terry Lacey of Oak Harbor also entered the race, stating no party preference.

ISLAND COUNTY CLERK
Michelle Schisler of Oak Harbor is serving as interim county clerk after Debra Van Pelt’s retirement. Schisler, previously chief deputy clerk under Van Pelt, will serve until the November election but is not running for the position. Four other candidates are seeking the post: Deirdre Butler of Coupeville and Amber Sewell of Oak Harbor are running as Democrats; Toni Adams of Freeland and Maria Hazelo filed as Republicans.

ISLAND COUNTY SHERIFF
Incumbent Rick Felici of Coupeville filed for re-election as an Independent. He has previously run as a Republican. Langley Police Chief Tavier Wasser of Clinton is running as a Democrat.

OTHER COUNTY ELECTIONS
All other county offices up for election this year have incumbents running unopposed. These include County Coroner Shantel Porter, County Prosecutor Greg Banks, County Treasurer Tony Lam and District Court Judge Ronald Costeck.
